Many businesses desire to be respected and looked at as the head and leading figure in their industry. Don’t we all as business owners desire this role, but many of us have no idea how to get in a leading position in our industries. Many business owners ask the question, “Do you have to be in the industry for 10 years plus, have thousands of clients, or stand next to the best who do it? My answer is yes to all of these questions but what’s more important than them all, is becoming an active figure in the community, documenting your accomplishments to the world and creating an identity for the rest of the world.
You may ask the question, “Well where in the heck do I begin?” A good way to start is PR. If you don’t understand the power of PR, it is the practice of managing the spread of information between an individual or an organization (such as a business, government agency, or a nonprofit organization) and the public. That’s the definition from Google but my definition for PR is promoting your brand or business on large media platforms like radio, tv, articles and then distributing it to a large massive audience that you yourself didn’t have access to before.
If a business owner does this own a regular basis you will then create an awareness from the public who wouldn’t another wise no who you are. This will automatically create an identity in the eye of the general public and if done on the right platform make you a staple in the eyes of most. If you are thinking, “Man Chris I am a private person and like to put the business in front of the public and not myself.” I can understand that point but if you are trying to build more than a business and create a legacy and an identity, people want to know what the company stands for, that means what you stand for as the business owner. Just think about Chick-fil-a for example, the company’s culture is influenced by its founder Truett Cathy’s Southern Baptist beliefs; all Chick-fil-A restaurants are closed for business on Sunday as well as Thanksgiving and Christmas. But this company still happens to thrive because the people are aware of the owner’s morals, beliefs and what he stands for.
The beauty of PR is that you can choose what you want to make public and what you want to keep private. Unfortunately, like every large territory that we come into, there are downsides. Once in the public light, there may be information out there about the failures and low moments in your personal life to the masses that you don’t want out there but no worries as long as you stay active and remain a positive influence in your community the positive will always defeat the negative so don’t let that scare you. If you don’t know where to start, get with a company that offers PR strategies services and that can manage the image of your company brand.
